Ambarvalia XV War, Wandering, and Nietzsche: On Nishiwaki and Hagiwara in the 1930s
The Ambarvalia Festival, which commemorates the birth of Junzaburō Nishiwaki, has been held annually in January since 2012.
This symposium will be held under the theme ‘War, Wandering and Nietzsche: Exploring Nishiwaki and Hagiwara in the 1930s’. Focusing on the interactions between Junzaburō Nishiwaki and Sakutarō Hagiwara during the 1930s, we will trace the pre-war paths of these two figures. First, Mr. Kiwao Nomura will speak about the relationship and exchanges between ‘Nishiwaki vs. Hagiwara’, as summarized in his recent work. Next, Sakutarō researcher Mr. Hiuma Kurihara will present ‘Poets Unlocking “Cat Town”: Junzaburō Nishiwaki, Sakutarō Hagiwara, and the “Monkey” of Thus Spoke Zarathustra’. His talk will touch upon their relationship with Nietzsche while delving into aspects rarely discussed before. Furthermore, Mr. Satoshi Yasu, who has long researched Sakutarō Hagiwara, will explore into the relationship between the poetry of the two in a presentation titled “The 'Meister” Hagiwara and Junzaburō Nishiwaki'. Following the brief intermission, a discussion among the three speakers is scheduled. It is generally accepted that Nishiwaki distanced himself from poetry for approximately ten years from 1935. This symposium will re-examine this period, deepening the discussion through comparison with Sakutarō. We sincerely look forward to your participation.
