Lecture and Guided Tour "Visiting Temples in Local Area: Trans/Formation of Temple Town in Minato City"

Teramachi (Temple town) is an area of a city frequented by temples. Mita area in Minato city, where Keio University is located, is a typical example. In the early modern period, temples began to form communities transcending religious sects. Temples, the centres of the religious community, carried out various activities in a close relationship with the lives of local people. From the early modern period to the present day, how did Temple towns develop, and what kind of activities did they do? In this special talk, we will consider the formation and transition of the city through visiting Temple town.
