Ambarvalia XⅢ: Everything is a Joke in the World of Junzaburo Nishiwaki... and Basho... and Baudelaire?

The Ambarvalia Festival, which commemorates the birth of Junzaburo Nishiwaki, has been held annually in January since 2012. For this year’s programming, Keio will hold a symposium on “Junzaburo Nishiwaki and Humor.” The humor that underpins Nishiwaki’s work and the playful expressions that decorate his prose have been highlighted by multiple scholars who have studied his poetry, Shun'ichi Niikura among them. For this year’s symposium, Keio has invited Kai Hasegawa, a giant in modern haiku, and Shoichiro Iwakiri, a poet and expert in French literature, to examine the various ways in which “humor” colors Nishiwaki’s body of work across time and genre. This event has been planned and coordinated by renowned poet, Kiwao Nomura.

The symposium will also be available to watch through a livestreamed Zoom webinar. Please check the event website and social media for updates.
