Films & Symposia: Art & Visual Anthropology - Frontiers of Anthropological Expression Towards a New Relationship between Observation and Expression Using Visual Images and Other Art Forms

Visual anthropology has been merging academic research on the screen and the art of cinema in one genre since its emergence as a sub-discipline, although the emphasis has been all along on the output of ethnographic material for research purpose.

The goal of the present project is to re-locate visual anthropology between documentary and art forms by reviewing some of its pioneering work. This kind of reflection on our past is, we believe, a necessary step for the future development of the field.

With the kind assistance and collaboration of the institutions mentioned below, classic works are going to be screened along with contemporary works followed by a discussion of invited speakers at the end of the two-day program.

This is also one of the first occasions when the potential significance of newly arising contemporary Japanese visual anthropological films will be contextualized, by inviting world-leading visual anthropologists as one contributing unique stream revealing a new trend of visual practices in the contemporary world-wide visual anthropological scenes.
